The Integration of Natural and Cultural Heritage

The Barari Diriyah Wildlife Conservation Center project in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia presents a unique integration of landscape, architecture, and ecological storytelling. Rooted in the spirit of the rural Nadj setting, the master plan draws inspiration from the region’s traditional architecture and lifestyle, weaving together animal exhibits, visitor attractions, food and beverage venues, and operational facilities. This integration is carefully composed within the striking dry riverine landscape of Wadi Hanifah, offering a distinctive interpretation of central Saudi Arabia’s natural and cultural heritage.

The Vision is the celebration of productive landscapes, where traditional elements such as date palm plantations, stone and timber craftsmanship, shaded plazas, and hand-dug wells come together to reflect the rural Nadj identity. These features not only serve functional purposes but also ground the visitor experience in authenticity and cultural depth. The approach supports a deeper understanding of the land’s past and present uses, showcasing how human activity has harmonized with nature for generations.

The Wadi Plain, Rocky Gully and Wetland

The Barari Diriyah Wildlife Conservation Center landscape is the primary character of the Wildlife Conservation Center experience. Embracing a vision that puts landscape first, the design treats the land as a sanctuary for both wildlife and people. Architectural forms intersect with the terrain in soft, petal-like arrangements, creating a fluid transition between built and natural environments. This concept of “Petal Intersections” reinforces the principle of blending, rather than imposing, architecture upon the land.

To reflect the varied microclimates of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the landscape master plan introduces four interpretative zones that transition seamlessly from indoor to outdoor environments. These include the Wadi Plain, Rocky Gully, and Wetland areas—each capturing specific ecological narratives and habitat types. Visitors move through these zones in a way that mirrors natural progression, allowing for an immersive and educational experience.

Each zone highlights distinctive environmental characteristics. The Rocky Gully features palm-dotted valleys and stone outcrops; the Wadi Plain showcases grasslands and alluvial plains shaped by ancient water flows; while the Wetland brings life to the desert with freshwater ponds and seasonal habitats. These carefully curated zones offer not only biodiversity but also moments of reflection and connection with the land.

A Living Landscape

The Barari Diriyah Wildlife Conservation Center is envisioned as a living landscape—one where conservation, culture, and creativity converge. It is not merely a place to observe animals, but a platform for learning, discovery, and appreciation of Saudi Arabia’s natural richness. Through thoughtful design and environmental sensitivity, the zoo aspires to become a landmark of sustainable and meaningful experience.
