Located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, in leafy suburban Jalan Bellamy, the site is well known and frequented by the community for the infamous Ikan Bakar (Burnt Fish) food stall.
Historically, the land housed a degraded swatter’s village plus a number of dilapidated colonial buildings, residing under the tall remnant rainforest canopy. Set on a ridge, the steeply sloping site that features distant views of Kuala Lumpur city to the south-west, falls approximately 30 meters into a previously polluted creek that flowed with a marginal to poor quality stream of water.
Located adjacent to a cemetery, the land was used as a garbage pit and over time, as the landfill grew, and final surfaces were applied, it become an open, derelict piece of land, inherently negative and devoid of character.

Orchard Park now stands as a tribute to forward thinking officials concerned with the wellbeing of the community. The provision of this transformed landscape combines and provides new avenues for social, economic and environmental sustainability initiatives within the district.
Since the area is famous for the ‘burnt fish’ delicacy, the design team explored the connection between this local cuisine and the park amenities. Fusing the two ideas has resulted in the establishment of a Pasar - food market - on the site. Now sited above the upper orchards, the pasar reinforces the concept of and connection between the working, edible, and enjoyable landscape.

The design took advantage of the sloping lawns to replant productive orchards of Malaysia using organic methods of propagation. In addition, research into the forest fruits of the local indigenous rainforest resulted in the identification of up with six tree species which have been planted into the upper reaches of the site, primarily located along the creek line. In association with the concept of edible plants we created large sheds for hawker stalls where local businessmen and women can
prepare, cook, sell, and eat the unique taste and foods of Malaysia, in an environment that promises a future of nourishing and tranquil landscape possibilities.

As part of the original concept we established an education and information centre which revealed stories about the journey of the fruits from distant lands and arriving at Malaysia. The intention was officers would walk the site with students and visitors showing and tasting the fruits of Malaysia.

The creek was extremely polluted due to waters from the upper catchment. Our team set up a simple treatment train of sedimentation ponds, reed beds and weir walls to clean the water. In addition the stormwater from the site used water sensitive urban design principles to clean the water before reaching the main creek line creating unique reflection ponds, water landscapes and white noise.
